day 6 - 4th of july!

the highlight of my day by far was doing deep water aerobics for an hour to american-themed music...first up was "coming to america" by neil diamond, somewhere in the mix was "american girl" by tom petty, and it all ended with "american pie"...the madonna version (gag). i followed that workout up with some yoga, a class about posture, and a class about healthy backs. and all of the fitness staff wore red, white, and blue beads except for one intern who wore the most gaudy red, white, and blue clown wig. can't blame them for adding a little variety to our day. by luchtime i was hungry and sleeeeeeeepy, and by our 3:30 class about preventing injuries, i was pretty much asleep sitting up. it was really tempting to just go outside and rest for the 30 minutes before dinner, but i actually dragged myself to the treadmill and walked for 30 minutes while getting my heartrate up to the target rate for at least 20 of them. and you know what...it actually did energize me the way everyone says exercise is supposed to! and i actually LIKED walking on the treadmill. i don't know if it's the environment or the fact that i'm not surrouded by waifer-thin personal trainers and perfectly proportioned people or what, but i actually enjoyed just walking for a full 30 minutes. i just hope i continue to like it after my four weeks are up!

we did talk a little about what to do when your exercise regimen stops working and you stop losing weight. they suggested several things, including changing the frequency (either increase or decrease), changing the intensity (more or less), the time of day, and the time spent exercising. they also suggested changing your activity, so if you run on the treadmill every day, change to riding the bike or swimming, or try adding weights to your cardio too. and (here was the surprising one) they suggested decreasing OR increasing your calorie intake! they seem to have an answer for everything.

saturday is no rest day, so i'll be back at the DFC by 8:45am ready for another day of workouts and learning. happy 4th of july! hope you didn't get rained on...
